Daniel G.M. McGee brings us unrivaled epic fantasy in the first book of The Emorean Prophecy: Of Ash and Salt. Aiden Hein was raised as a hunter in the foothills of the Northern Spine. When his father is injured by a possessed bear and infected by the Tainting, Aiden decides he will do whatever it takes to save his father’s life, even if that means traveling to the South with the mage, Ledarein, to steal a precious relic. Far from the North, in the city of Crownhold, Eila, an orphan, dreads the upcoming mass where the Cernite Order could discover her best friend’s wonderful gift and take him from her forever. People change when the Order gets their hands on them. When destinies are linked in a way that could either save the world or eradicate it, everyone needs to tread carefully.
Author Daniel G.M. McGee has created a world rich in diversity and culture. Right from the start of this book, the author grabs your attention and does not let it stray. Characters have depth and personality, which make them likable. Dialogue is an orchestra of perfection, and you will often find yourself smiling at the interactions. Written in the third-person narrative from the perspective of three characters, Of Ash and Salt is one of those books that you can completely lose yourself in. Fight scenes are well choreographed, and you will feel each blow with a sword down your arms. Even with some explicit language, I highly recommend this book to young adult readers as well and eagerly look forward to the next one.
