On an Ocean Journey: Animals in Motion through the Seas by Elizabeth Shreeve takes readers on a colorful adventure through Earth's interconnected oceans. In rhyming text and with scientifically accurate illustrations, the book celebrates over 30 sea creatures and their distinctive movement across various marine habitats—from the shallow kelp forests to the vast open ocean. From fish darting among the coral to the great mammals that ride the ocean currents, readers will see it all. Targeting children between the ages of 5 and 9, the book balances entertaining storytelling with educational elements, with a field guide to wildlife and conservation messages to foster a lifelong love of marine ecosystems.

This book is a real tribute to the wonders of the ocean, with education and entertainment perfectly balanced for a young audience. The rhyming text makes the story even more fun and catchy to read aloud, while the dynamic, detailed illustrations by Ray Troll place readers in an underwater world. I like how the animals themselves tell the story with their natural behaviors and movements. The pace moves quickly from one species to another, which holds the attention of young readers without overwhelming them. Themes of interconnectedness and conservation are very timely and impactful, especially presented in a way to inspire curiosity rather than to lecture. The addition of a field guide is a clever touch, making the book useful beyond the storytelling and expanding into a resource for budding marine enthusiasts. This is a visually stunning, thoughtfully written book that entertains and fosters a sense of stewardship for our planet's oceans.
