Only So Many Shopping Days Till Christmas by Jane and Haley Grecsek is a profanity-laced, hugely humorous self-help book that reimagines aging as a countdown to celebration rather than what many consider to be a somber walk toward oblivion. The book is inspired by a single line from The Evening Star and features a collection of short stories that constitute the “ultimate guidebook on how to have a good time before you go.” The grandmother and granddaughter duo tackle the reality of mortality head-on and offer insights into irreverent issues, including writing your own will and planning a funeral worthy of Queen Elizabeth. There are hilarious takes on skydiving at ninety, installing backyard pools, racing Lamborghinis, and having facial surgery to avoid looking like a “prune.”
Jane and Haley Grecsek entertained me with this thought-provoking book, and I was forced to think as I read on. It felt like I was at a comedy show, watching two comedians distill wisdom about living the last years of life with style and gusto. They skillfully blend scatological, dark humor with practicality, delivering a literary cocktail that is part bucket list and part estate planning. Only So Many Shopping Days Till Christmas has an unapologetic tone that kept me invested and nodding in agreement many times as I read from chapter to chapter. This book forced me to think about my own anxiety over death. It offers a rare intergenerational perspective on planning and facing the inevitable moment of our mortality; it is smart, sharp in humor, and packed with unconventional wisdom.
