In Oscar and Number One's Multiplication Adventure by Romilda Byrd, Mrs. Garcia introduces her class to multiplication, explaining it as counting equal groups quickly. She demonstrates with blocks, showing that 2 × 3 = 6, then focuses on multiplying by one. Oscar and his classmates imagine visiting Multiplication Town, guided by Number One, to explore examples of 1 multiplied by numbers from 0 to 10. At each location—a post office, fruit stand, kite shop, ice cream stand, park, shoe store, music store, pet shop, and playground—Oscar counts objects to confirm results such as 1 × 0 = 0, 1 × 4 = 4, and 1 × 10 = 10. Each example reinforces that multiplying by one produces the other number. The adventure ends with Oscar returning to class, ready to learn multiplication with two.

Oscar and Number One’s Multiplication Adventure by Romilda Byrd, with illustrations by Jeric Tan, is a bright and joyful reminder of how creative and fun learning math can be. The story is adorable, and my youngest reader, who is only six, was able to completely understand it and now knows this entry-level multiplication table. A trip through Multiplication Town with Oscar and his new friend includes stops like a fruit stand with one apple or a park with five ducks, offering playful reinforcement of the concept. The bold primary color palette and animation-style artwork feel fresh while giving a friendly nod to the 1990s. The cheerful visuals and simple scenarios work together perfectly to make multiplication approachable and memorable. This is a delightful pick for introducing early math skills in a way that feels like an adventure from start to finish. Very highly recommended.

In a math class, Mrs. Garcia announced to her pupils that they had mastered addition and subtraction and would be learning a new math skill: multiplication. The class received this news with different reactions, from excitement to surprise. Oscar was excited to learn something new, having worked hard to be good at addition and subtraction. Mrs. Garcia explained multiplication to the class and showed them different multiplication charts, then she took the class on a visit to Multiplication Town, where Number One, their guide, took them on a multiplication tour. Oscar and Number One’s Multiplication Adventure by Romilda Byrd is a fun introduction to multiplication.

Oscar and Number One’s Multiplication Adventure is a simple but colorful and educational story. I was impressed to have learned some things from this little read. First, I got a better understanding of the basis of multiplication. Of course, I know how to multiply, but Mrs. Garcia’s explanation of multiplication made me realize that multiplication is simply counting equal groups of things. Then I learned about the circle multiplication chart. I was also impressed with how Romilda Byrd created a whole adventure story about multiplication; she made learning math fun. Speaking of fun, I liked that the tour explored different settings, and I liked Oscar’s jolly and eager personality. This story is illustrated with beautiful artwork by Jeric Tan, which I loved. The illustrations are colorful, expressive, captivating, and detailed. I believe this book’s target audience will find it entertaining and instructive.
