In Oscar and Number One's Multiplication Adventure by Romilda Byrd, Mrs. Garcia introduces her class to multiplication, explaining it as counting equal groups quickly. She demonstrates with blocks, showing that 2 × 3 = 6, then focuses on multiplying by one. Oscar and his classmates imagine visiting Multiplication Town, guided by Number One, to explore examples of 1 multiplied by numbers from 0 to 10. At each location—a post office, fruit stand, kite shop, ice cream stand, park, shoe store, music store, pet shop, and playground—Oscar counts objects to confirm results such as 1 × 0 = 0, 1 × 4 = 4, and 1 × 10 = 10. Each example reinforces that multiplying by one produces the other number. The adventure ends with Oscar returning to class, ready to learn multiplication with two.
Oscar and Number One’s Multiplication Adventure by Romilda Byrd, with illustrations by Jeric Tan, is a bright and joyful reminder of how creative and fun learning math can be. The story is adorable, and my youngest reader, who is only six, was able to completely understand it and now knows this entry-level multiplication table. A trip through Multiplication Town with Oscar and his new friend includes stops like a fruit stand with one apple or a park with five ducks, offering playful reinforcement of the concept. The bold primary color palette and animation-style artwork feel fresh while giving a friendly nod to the 1990s. The cheerful visuals and simple scenarios work together perfectly to make multiplication approachable and memorable. This is a delightful pick for introducing early math skills in a way that feels like an adventure from start to finish. Very highly recommended.
