In Blood & Ice (Michael Flaherty Noir Book 2) by Bryan Beck, Michael is stunned when Maya Jensen, the daughter of his former commanding officer, David “Shadow” Jensen, tells him that David is alive but missing. Maya gave Michael a file and a flash drive with clues on how to find David. Something about the situation troubles Michael. At the same time, Michael’s girlfriend, Gracie, is investigating a missing person named Gary. Gracie finds him mixed up with drug dealers and terrified of someone called Doctor Vallentine. When Michael helps her search the area, he notices tracks from a military Humvee and discovers a bag marked with an unfamiliar logo. Gary’s case is officially closed, yet the pieces do not add up: where did the drugs originate, what does the logo mean, and where did the dealers vanish?
Blood & Ice by Bryan Beck is a great blend of suspense and investigative intrigue. I was hooked from start to finish. The pacing was fast, and I did not have a chance to put the book down. I was wondering if Gary’s disappearance, Michael’s missing commander, and Doctor Vallentine were connected. The events were vivid, and it was easy to feel part of them. The characters were realistic, and each had a background story. Michael’s character was determined and guided by loyalty and instinct. Gracie and Michael's relationship gradually grows into something deeper, and even the danger could not keep them apart. The story was expertly written, and the action kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed this book and being kept in the dark until the end.
