Field of Memories: A Tapestry of Heartwarming Short Stories by D.L. Norris is a compilation of original, autobiographical pieces that lean into slices of life. A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes recalls her mother traveling to Southern California for Disneyland’s dedication, leaving a week of loosened routines with her father, later marked by Disney records and souvenirs. Girls and Curls remembers childhood home permanents done in the garage, producing uneven hairstyles remembered through photographs. In Thirteen Chicks, Norris wins baby chickens at a school carnival, keeps them briefly at home, then accompanies their relocation to an Idaho farm. In Thief of Memories, she traces her father’s life, noting the contrast between the breadth of his lived experience and the narrowed awareness of his final years.

Field of Memories by D.L. Norris is a wonderful collection of short stories, made so much better by the fact that they are actually real. I am rarely moved by a memoir written by and about someone I do not know, or know of, but Norris's short format pulled me in straight away. Once I was eyeballs deep in the pages, I could not put it down. Picking a favorite is nearly impossible, but there are two that stood out for me. A Picnic in the Park embraces recurring summer family picnics where simple planning, assigned dishes, park games, and fireflies show how ordinary rituals shape belonging. In the story Second Chances, Norris shares life after marrying Quincy, and how his steady role with her parents, marked by daily help, reassurance, and follow-through, eased uncertainty and fully affirmed their partnership. This is a lovely collection. Very highly recommended.

Field of Memories: A Tapestry of Heartwarming Short Stories by D.L. Norris is constructed from experiences drawn from the author's everyday life. It is akin to a scrapbook made from interlocking pieces of her life. The short narratives are divided into sections that span decades and cover different parts of growing up, from childhood memories and family life to getting older and becoming an adult. Woven into the author's nostalgic narratives are formative events that shaped her identity and values. Set mostly in mid-20th-century America, the author goes into details that make the past feel real, recalling her favorite people, pets, and the activities, historical events, songs, films, things, food, cars, and unforgettable fashion trends that pervaded daily life. The book is presented as a vividly captured patchwork of lived experience. Along with some sections are her poems, which highlight memorable moments that invite deeper reflection.

Field of Memories by D.L. Norris explores memory and reflection. It shows how everyday events shaped her personality, choices, and life. Clear and straightforward language details her changes and transitions. Other people feel real and relatable, playing quiet yet significant roles in her story. The calm tone, steady pacing, and short chapters make it an easy read. Its themes include remembrance, love, kindness, resilience, and forgiveness. The author also discusses grief, loss, moral responsibility, and racism. She believes that no life is unimportant and that small moments can offer valuable lessons. For her, ordinary lives matter because they contain love, growth, and values to be shared with others. These elements help foster empathy and a fair appreciation of our shared humanity. Vibrant photos bring her memories to life, adding authenticity, understanding, and emotional depth. This book is ideal for readers who enjoy memoirs, family stories, nostalgia, life lessons, and personal growth, and who see meaning in the little snippets and details of ordinary lives.

Field of Memories: A Tapestry of Heartwarming Short Stories by D. L. Norris is perfectly summed up in the title. She presents us with 57 vignettes, all of which are accompanied by images, and many feature short rhymed poems that encapsulate the emotion of the prose. Norris is not only a talented writer and poet; she also excels at book design. Her entire presentation would make a hit on any coffee table. She tells us in her preamble that her mind has always been “a gallery of vivid snapshots,” and that is a perfect description of her book. The verbal snapshots are presented in order throughout her rich and inspiring life, thus far, which in its joyfulness has also borne a measure of heartache. She is a child of the sixties, and along with personal reminiscences, she reminds us of the historical events along the way and how they affected her and her family.

I enjoyed this book immensely, laughed out loud, recalled my own life (which has been led almost along with her timeline), nodded often in agreement with her observations, and even shed a few tears. What comes across above all the details and emotions, however, is her unshakeable faith. She was raised mostly in the Northwest, is an ardent member of her church (even a performer in a gospel group), a devotee to her family, and, without being evangelistic in her book, her faith shines forth in her love of ordinary daily life. She celebrates the beauty of the commonplace—a small table, a pair of red boots, a stroll along a winding stream. But always in this book, she cherishes her family and her faith in an exquisite combination of prose, poetry, imagery, history, and aesthetics. Field of Memories by D. L. Norris is an exquisitely inspired portrait of a life well-lived and will be an inspiration to any reader.
