Pepper’s family abandoned her at a McDonald’s in Texas. Sad, alone, scared, the little dog named Pepper had to fend for herself. She managed to get enough food from McDonald’s patrons and she found a house nearby where she could curl up underneath. But she was still lonely and scared. When a lady tried to rescue Pepper, she managed to escape, but the lady didn’t give up. Night after night, she brought food and water for Pepper until finally, the little dog allowed the lady to take her. She was taken to a safe home with other dogs and was happy to finally find her fur-ever home.
Shanna Davis’s picture book story, Pepper’s Rescue, is a true story. So many dogs (and cats) are abandoned by their owners. Luckily for Pepper, someone reached out to her and took the time to gain her trust before taking her to a safe place. The plot follows Pepper’s struggle for survival, her learning to trust again until she finds her fur-ever home. The story is simple so young readers can follow along. The bright, bold, colorful illustrations help carry the story along. The author weaves a compassionate and heartwarming story around a precious little dog looking for love. The message is clear and important: that we must look after our four-legged, furry friends, we must love and care for them as part of the family. We can’t cast them off and abandon them. A beautiful story about love lost and found again.
