Permutation Archives: The Harvested by Kindra Sowder is the story of Mila, whose blood holds a power that is desired by the good as well as the not so good parties of this story. Unfortunately, the bad guys got their hands on Mila first. After the population has been tested for a special something in their blood, Mila and some of her friends are taken away to a secret facility, where more tests are done on them. While Mila's friends have interesting abilities, Mila is one of a kind, and has to endure one especially cruel test. On the outside, others are planning to break Mila out - but can a few people have any kind of chance against the government with a rather evil leader? And can Mila learn to use her powers effectively?
Permutation Archives: The Harvested by Kindra Sowder fortunately is only the first book in a series. At the end of book 1, one story arc is finished, but you are left with the definite knowledge that there's a lot more to come for Mila and her friends (and foes). Yes, there are dozens, if not hundreds, of stories about people with special abilities or superpowers out there, but Mila's story is interesting and draws you in right from the start. I would have liked the book to be longer, but I guess I'll just have to wait for the next one in the series.
I found some of the supporting characters' actions quite interesting - it's not the typical "you were always my friend, so even if you did something bad, I will not have an issue with it or ever betray you" kind of story. In this plot, you have one or the other character that does not forgive, and the reader will see the consequences of that. While it's a dystopian story, the behaviour of the characters is believable, and that's one of the aspects that makes this an enjoyable read!
