Pinocchio’s Final String by C. Fulster starts with Pinocchio in a deep forest where he meets the White Rabbit. She tells him his dead father created him from a magical juniper tree and warns him some people will want a piece of him for their own evil ends. He must be careful whom he trusts. He asks how he will know, and the rabbit tells him that it is something he must decide for himself. Pinocchio has numerous harrowing experiences, being pursued by a witch, the Big Bad Wolf, who huffs and puffs and blows down a gingerbread house, Ebenezer Scrooge, the Headless Horseman, the Cheshire Cat, and others. All want a piece of him, which would mean his destruction. But whom can he trust? He gets his answer from a totally unexpected source.
C. Fulster weaves elements of many popular fairytales into Pinocchio’s Final String that would be instantly familiar to very young readers who believe in fairies and magic. This is an easy and enjoyable story. C. Fulster does not explain everything, relying on the reader’s knowledge of relevant fairytales and their main characters to fill in the blanks. This works well and saves many pages in background explanation. Pinocchio’s flight through a forbidding forest, pursued by a multitude of enemies, has a poignant point. When he asks the White Rabbit if his life is to run from others, she tells him his adventures were a lesson. Go through life trusting others to make choices for him, or be himself and make his own. Young readers and those young at heart will find delightful entertainment in Pinocchio’s Final String.
