Pip and the Beasts Mend the Sky by Rupi Gill is a lovely story that draws inspiration from the symbiotic relationship observed between the buffalo and the White-Headed Buffalo Weavers. The birds are good at worrying. They worry that if they fly, they’ll melt. They worry that the buffalo’s horns are so big that they’ll tear the sky open. But soon, Pip begins to worry about Baby Beast, who seems to be ill, following a fight between the two friends over a tick on Baby Beast’s back. Pip gathers the other birds, and together they devise a plan to hold up the sky with their feet so it can have time to repair while the buffalo rest. Will Mama Beast see how helpful the birds are, and choose to help? Will the birds learn to fly again?
Through these characters, author Rupi Gill explores themes of healing, courage, and teamwork in a modern fable that will leave children feeling empowered and uplifted. The mythological elements help create this endearing tale and provide it with a playful energy right from the beginning. The dialogue explores the different beliefs of the two sets of animals, such as the birds believing that the beasts’ horns are tearing the sky. This gives the writing a lyrical quality that is beautiful and rich, making for an ideal structure to bring a fable to life. There’s a genuineness about the characters as they wish to heal the sky and help each other, which highlights the importance of taking time to heal and leaning on others to help you do so. The illustrations have a softness to them in the gentle hues and animal imagery, creating lovely, eye-catching layouts. Pip and the Beasts Mend the Sky is a playful and charming story that is a sweet read for parents and children alike. This modern fable comes to life and reveals an invaluable lesson about healing, compassion, and working together.
