In Pop-Pop Says Yes to Almost Anything by J. R. Buchta, readers meet an enthusiastic grandfather who’s happiest when he’s saying “yes” to time with his grandkids. The story lays out one fun idea after another—from trips to the beach to having some ice cream as a treat—proving that each ordinary moment becomes special when shared with someone who truly enjoys being with you. There’s only one time he actually says no to them. What could they be asking that would make him answer them in such a different way? There’s also a playful element to find the hidden “yes” on every page. Joyce Allston once said, “Grandparents, like heroes, are as necessary to a child’s growth as vitamins,” and this children’s picture book proves just that.

Pop-Pop Says Yes to Almost Anything by J. R. Buchta is a warm, feel-good read that made me smile from start to finish. I’ve always thought my grandpa was the greatest person I’ve ever known, and this book shows that the children in the story think the same. As an educator, I think the simple, repeating questions and answers make it a great read-aloud. It could certainly be used in a school setting to spark discussions about special moments with grandparents, gratitude, and ways we can say “yes” to helping others. A few extension activities could include making a classroom “yes” list, students drawing pictures of their loved ones, or writing thank-you notes to grandparents or caregivers. The artwork by Daniela Frongia is colorful and inviting. The illustrations are full of cozy details that kids will want to point out and discuss, especially as they try to find the hidden “yes” words. Fans of upbeat, grandparent-centered stories will love this fun, reassuring, and genuinely enjoyable look at family time.
