"Power Blind" by Steven Gore is a solid thriller from the first page to the last. Private Investigator Grahan Gage isn't quite sure who he is working for as a complicated death leads to the top power positions in Washington, D.C. Palmer is a financial genius who specializes in burying the secrets of the rich and the powerful. He reaches out to Gage from his death bed but he dies before he can disclose his secrets to Gage. This thrusts Gage into speculation about the activities of Palmer who is married to Gage's friend. The mystery seems to involve big time money laundering oversees but it also seems to involve impending appointments for two Supreme Court nominees as well as the next Presidential election. The interweaving of the various stories is sufficient to keep even the most diehard mystery sleuths in suspense for most of the book.
The author's insider knowledge of the working world of the rich and influential is marvelous! He skillfully laces his knowledge with just enough speculation to keep his readers guessing. Gore is a master storyteller who has the delightful habit of upending his readers' conclusions time and time again. Gore does not run on regular gasoline. Being an international PI himself, he knows from whence he speaks and it shows in his writings. He begins with a premise valuable due to its current interest - finance and intrigue. Then, he provides unforgettable characters who rarely do the right thing. The pace of the story is so rapid that the reader can only guess at the placement of the clues in the overall scheme. Gore is a literary craftsman.
