In their land full of straight lines, six-year-old Princess Francesca Fusspot finds a forbidden magical tower, altering the course of her life. The princess never liked or obeyed the strict rules handed down from her peculiar ancestors, but she tries to be tidy for her parents. Her nursemaid understands Francesca's desires to talk to her animal friends and have fun, but her parents are worried the "watchers" will take their daughter away. They send her to stay with her aunt and uncle, and Francesca's cousins try to teach her to be a princess. In return, Francesca takes them on an adventure and asks them to help her with a plan to end the ancient Fusspots' influence.
