Quest of Fire: Shadows at Nightfall is a work of fiction in the Christian fantasy genre, and serves as the third installment in the series. It is suitable for the general reading audience and was penned by Brett Armstrong. The book continues the story of Jason as he finds himself pursued by dangerous and mystical assassins who are also targeting people involved in investigating the Tower of Light. Determined to stay ahead of his would-be killers and unravel why they want him dead to begin with, Jason must dive deep into the mysteries of his world and his own past.
Straight out of the gate, Shadows at Nightfall wastes no time in resuming the pace and tension of its predecessors. It’s an easy stumbling block to make in writing a sequel to lose the momentum gained but no such errors occur here as Jason and Anargen find themselves targeted by deadly and persistent foes. Brett Armstrong’s world-building is as strong as ever, balancing the links to the previous books while expanding on and introducing new elements to keep readers sinking deeper and deeper into his mysterious world. The descriptive writing is sublime and sets the tone for the whole novel that makes the book impossible to put down. The decision to present Jason’s predicament of the assassins as one part adventure thriller and one part mystery was a masterstroke as the switching between the high stakes encounters with the would-be assassins and the more thoughtful investigative scenes allowed for a beautiful rhythm and pacing of the whole experience.
