Rachel and Sammy’s Prairie Partner, with photographs and text by Jannifer Powelson, is a book to treasure. This field guide to the plants of the Midwestern prairie complements the author’s earlier Rachel Raccoon and Sammy Skunk picture book series for young children. It is intended for older children, but makes a wonderful introduction to native prairie, woodland edge, savanna, and wetland plants for readers of all ages. There are 270 species listed here, with beautiful photographs of each. For easy identification, there are sections on Grasses, Orange and Red, Purple and Pink, White and Cream, and Yellow and Gold blooms. Alongside photographs of each plant, there are details with the common and scientific names, bloom color, height, bloom dates, and fun facts about preferred habitat, scent, uses, etc.

Rachel and Sammy’s Prairie Partner by Jannifer Powelson does a wonderful job of communicating her love of the prairie and, at the same time, educating readers about the plants they will find there. It would make a good reference to take along on a nature walk or camping trip, or just to browse in a quiet hour. The photographs capture the simple beauty of the wild grasses and flowers. Powelson’s voice of experience, cautioning that there are always variations and exceptions in the natural world, will be helpful when encountering plants in their native habitat. This book would be a good tool for educators and parents, a handy reference guide, and a beautiful gift for readers and nature lovers of all ages. Highly recommended.
