In Rain Dodging, Susan J. Godwin chronicles her life story parallel to narrating her tour of Britain, seeking to uncover the truth about the seventeenth-century Duchess of York, Mary of Modena, and her court of female writers. After being granted a fellowship, Susan traveled to Oxford, England, to research how Mary became the Queen consort of James II, later assumed the regency of the throne, and became the patron of women's education and arts. Susan recounts her travels through the castles and palaces Mary lived in all over England and Scotland. In between, she takes a deep dive into her past, beginning with her tumultuous childhood, her relationships with different men, including a physically abusive musician, her marriage to a country music star, and her husband Tony, who suffered a traumatic brain injury.
Rain Dodging: A Scholar's Romp Through Britain in Search of a Stuart Queen shows the power of human resilience by following the stories of two women from very different backgrounds and periods trying to carve their own place in the world. Part memoir and part historical, this book is not only informative but also emotionally captivating and entertaining. Susan J. Godwin gives an unflinching account of her past, sharing all the highs and lows that shaped the course of her life and made her the person she is today. The author also provides readers with a glimpse into the trials and tribulations of Mary of Modena and what she had to overcome to leave her mark on history. The book is very well-researched, written in an accessible style, and thoroughly engrossing. If you enjoy reading true stories about inspiring women, you will love this book.
