In her memoir Real Estate Rebel, Sybil James Ellis, a young mother in Atlanta, begins rebuilding her life after horrific trauma, an abusive relationship, and the collapse of a marriage leave her raising daughter Jen largely on her own. Employment becomes a necessity, yet commercial real estate soon gives her something far greater as she discovers an instinct for negotiation inside an industry where women are rarely welcomed as decision-makers. Job losses and financial hardship repeatedly threaten the security she is trying to create, even as each new position brings greater responsibility. A chance connection eventually leads her to The Equity Group, where property sales develop into major investment work across the country. Her memoir follows a woman building an extraordinary career while carrying experiences that make every opportunity she receives mean considerably more.

Sybil James Ellis’s Real Estate Rebel is an exceptional memoir, and I appreciated how openly she writes about what it took to reach rooms where women were barely expected to appear. Her humor gives those memories tremendous personality, like when a banking contact advises her to look dowdy for an interview, prompting her to borrow her mother’s bifocals before accidentally walking into a glass wall after telling the interviewer exactly what she thinks of his sexist assumptions. That candor makes her later accomplishments especially satisfying, including her creation of the Equity Office Properties Women’s Network after years spent experiencing the barriers she hoped other women would encounter less often. I loved that the memoir gives equal importance to the woman behind the deals and the executive she became. Honest, funny and inspiring, readers who enjoy memoirs about women building extraordinary careers will adore this.
