Jessica Manges’ Rebellion of the Watchers is a spellbinding fantasy set in the 687th year of Adam. The story pulls readers into a vividly imagined pre-Flood world in which rebellious angels rule cities. The giant Nephilim offspring terrorize humanity. A young messenger named Arvad rides his loyal dragon, Tann, and works for the watcher Semjaza, receiving payments in silks, precious gemstones, crystal glasses, and spices. Arvad also secretly admires Ellie, the woman betrothed to his brother Doron. A routine delivery quickly spirals into something dark and dangerous. Villages are fed lies that turn neighbors into enemies and are armed with swords. Arvad and his brother uncover a conspiracy involving Azazel, a scheming watcher, Asherah, the sorceress, and twelve stolen seeds meant to recreate the tree of life. Now they are swept into a series of quests, death matches, and betrayals as the world teeters on the brink of chaos. Arvad must confront the evil around him and the truths of his faith.
Jessica Manges's work is elegiac, and the prose is filled with energy. The writing captures the beauty of a mythological world where dragons are couriers, watchers rule cities, and Cherubim with magnificent power guard Eden. The author has a unique gift for bringing the elements of the geography to life, from beautiful landscapes to mountain passes. Arvad instantly arrested my attention, as both a well-sculpted character and a clever narrator, and his humorous voice makes him one of those characters you never forget. His brother, Doron, is tender and selfless, and he enlivens the story with easy banter. Rebellion of the Watchers moves briskly, with action that shifts from dragon flights to daring escapes, arena fights, and battles with Tann. Fans of biblical fiction will have a lot to savor in this book, including the ingenious character work, the inventive mythology, and the irresistible narrative voice.
