"Referendum For Murder" by Mickey Polansky is a gripping tale that brings us face to face with murderers, their victims and the justice system. Jim Jones kills an abortion doctor in Oregon and then eludes arrest. In Wisconsin, Barbara Hernandez loses her husband in a bank heist and then her unborn baby in a miscarriage. The bank robber, John Morales, is then sentenced to life in prison without parole. With the help of State Representative Thomas McCormick, Barbara works for the reinstatement of the death penalty in Wisconsin. Faced with what seems like an uphill battle, the two persist and in the process, they also fall in love with each other. In an interesting twist of events, Jim Jones, who is against the reinstatement of the death penalty, surfaces again. And the plot gets more interesting after this turn.

This is a fast-paced novel that keeps the readers on their seats until they finish reading the book. Starting with the first pages of the book, we are presented with a police situation that makes us hunger to know the outcome of the events. Mickey Polansky's characters are vivid, showing that he has done his research for his novel. His description of police work and the American justice system is realistic and compelling at the same time. While we are treated with a roller coaster ride of political issues and men with twisted ideals and politicians, a love story also develops. It is amazing how the author can fit in the shoes of the varied characters who are depicted in the book. I get a glimpse of how a criminal mind works and experience the grief and happiness in Barbara Hernandez's life by reading his work. Taking a life is an unforgivable offense but will taking another life solve this problem? This is the difficult question that "Referendum For Murder" poses before its readers.

Dr. Oliva Dsouza

The book opens with the murder of a doctor at an abortion clinic. The suspect is not really bothered about his identity being discovered. In another place, a bank robbery goes horribly wrong and a police officer is shot and killed. His wife, Barbara Hernandez, is the bank teller. Not only does she lose her beloved husband Charlie, but she also miscarries their unborn child. Overcome with grief, she approaches Mr. Thomas McCormick, her Representative from the 84th District of the State of Wisconsin, to make sure such brutal and unrepentant killers receive the death penalty. As she convinces the representative for a need to draft a referendum to bring back the death penalty as a punishment for heinous crimes, she also gets romantically involved with Tom. But, there are people who do not like what is happening. They would like to put an end to the issue even if it means killing someone. Will the referendum get passed? Will Barbara have a chance at happiness again? Read "Referendum For Murder" by Mickey Polanski to know the complete truth.

The plot is excellent with a well-researched storyline. The way politics and politicians work is correctly depicted in the book. The debate about reinstating the death penalty has been well-presented and one does feel a sense of empathy for the victims while reading the book. The only place where the book needs more attention is the presentation and the way the story has been told. The story sounds more like someone verbally narrating a script to you in the present tense. There are a few spelling and grammatical mistakes that need attention.
