M.A.R. Unger’s Relentless is a compelling adventure, sweeping undercover Las Vegas Metro Officer Jenna Simms into intrigue and danger when she is caught up in an investigation into $400 million worth of stolen diamonds. A $9 million luxury boat is used as bait to lure Jenna into a plot which leads to the seedy underworld of power players, drugs, murder and blackmail as she tries to unravel the true criminals, including those hiding behind badges. Jenna then finds five of the stolen diamonds planted in her apartment, along with a dead informant, and is drawn inexorably to Miami, where she slowly peels away layers of deceit on her way to a gripping showdown she may not survive.

Relentless by M.A.R. Unger is a wonderful read. The story is fast paced and fluent, building suspense as it moves through many dramatic moments to reach a climatic ending that I didn’t predict. The author is extremely adept at molding the main characters and as the danger levels rise, you can’t help feeling genuine empathy and concern for their welfare. This is particularly true of Jenna, who has to move from one dangerous and volatile situation to the next whilst secretly investigating very dangerous individuals. The way she handles herself in these situations is very true to human nature and not contrived in any way. How this experience changes Jenna and influences her life is very believable. As the name suggests, this book was a relentless buildup of intense feelings and interest that had me struggling to stop reading until I knew how it all unfolded.
