Remarkable Business Women from the 19th Century by Emilia Fine is an extraordinary work that follows the lives and impact of six female business trendsetters who broke barriers, created change, and inspired other women to believe in themselves and pursue their goals. Shortly after Madam C. J. Walker was born in December 1867, her family experienced a devastating financial crisis. Though her parents had been freed from slavery, Walker grew up in constraining poverty. Still, nothing could stop her from accomplishing her dreams. Her long-lasting impact would later spread beyond the business world to philanthropic activities and empowering her community. The work chronicles the accomplishments of other women including Annie Malone, Helena Rubinstein, Anna Sutherland Bissell, Elizabeth Arden, and Hattie Carnegie. All six women achieved incredible success despite the daunting obstacles they encountered.
This is an incredibly hopeful work that encourages women from all backgrounds to choose their path. I found each woman’s story uplifting and loved that all six women broke common gender stereotypes and fought to have a voice when such feats seemed impossible for women at the time. The work offers a realistic look into what it took for these women to become successful, showing the value of dedication and commitment in the journey toward success. I found many sections in the book eye-opening including its themes about female leadership and the importance of contributing to society. Remarkable Business Women from the 19th Century by Emilia Fine is an empowering work that invites its audience to reflect on the challenges that women faced in the past and find solutions to those that they encounter today. Highly recommended.
