Author J.R. Lightfoot knows how to layer concept and content into this story, offering readers a thrilling blend of Christian mythology and fantasy that’s absolutely packed with action and interesting moral dilemmas. There’s so much detail to enjoy, but it’s also always relevantly placed to enhance a scene and never detracting from it. Lightfoot crafts an intricate world where faith and battle are fully linked in ways that make sense in the attitudes and motivations of the characters. Second novels are no mean feat to achieve with this level of momentum, and this gripping story raises the stakes and deepens the lore of the Chronicles of Reaper series with confident, naturalistic storytelling. Overall, I recommend Retribution to fans of the series so far, and the series to readers seeking epic battles and supernatural warfare who want an author that delivers on every front.
