Revelations by Sara L Daigle is book three of the Azellian Affairs series. In books one and two, Alawahea, protagonist Tamara's buried memories resurface when Azellian exchange students arrive. As her bond with them strengthens, Tam has questions about her connection to the Azellians. In Triangle, Tam discovers her psychic abilities and her link to Azelle, reshaping her identity. In a love triangle, she faces a life-changing decision, and a surprise announcement forces her to make an extraordinary choice. In Revelations, Tam is married to Alarin with a daughter, exhausted, and finds she is pregnant with twins. Alarin's family connection raises concerns about him being recalled to Azelle for a potential war, but things go from bad to worse when he is in a traumatic accident and loses his psi, and their shared connection.
What I loved most about Revelations by Sara L Daigle is the emotional depth that is reached, which tends to be the exception rather than the rule in most science fiction. What makes Daigle stand out further in this aspect is how well it is written and conveyed. I felt genuine, sadness as a reader when Alarin's vulnerability and past family struggles are revealed, and he shares his childhood memories and feelings about his parents and grandfather. The prose is exceptional and at times almost poetic. After Alarin's accident and having to contend with losing the most precious piece of himself, Daigle writes, “He got to his feet, his heels dragging, the weight of his fear pulling him down.” I felt that fear too. And the fear of war. Of uncertainty. Of loss. Of family in a multitude of ways...and this is a testament to Daigle's skill. We care and we want more because she has made everything so real. I cannot wait to see where we go next.
