Reverberations: A Compendium of Haikus and Photography by Charles E. Rawlings MD, JD is a thoughtful collection of Haiku and photography that anyone with a bit of the poet or artist in their soul will enjoy immensely. Haiku is a traditional poetic form from Japan. It combines form, content, and language itself into a compact poem that usually packs an emotional punch. Traditional Haiku from ancient Japan usually used nature and feelings as the subject, but one’s experiences can also be the theme of traditional Haiku. Haiku looks simple on the surface because the poet usually tries to use simple words to convey his meaning, but on reflection the simplest Haiku are very deep in meaning and message.
The most unique aspect of Reverberations is the matching of beautiful pictures to Haiku. Sometimes I couldn't see the connection immediately, but the connection is there and, as you search for that connection, you go deeper and deeper into the meaning of the Haiku itself. Another aspect of this unique book which I admired was the introduction. Yoda’s famous “Do or do not. There is no try.” is here as well as an excerpt from a speech by Teddy Roosevelt called Citizenship in a Republic, which I find very pertinent in this election year. Beautiful pictures and powerful words combine to make Reverberations a great book that I enjoyed immensely. Charles E. Rawlings MD, JD put this together in an artistic and thoughtful style that will resonate with anyone who appreciates the power of beauty and the power of beautiful words.
