Like a big bowl of frozen yogurt, this story is light and delicious. Ellen F. Feld's "Rimfire: The Barrel Racing Morgan Horse" is the story of teenaged Heather and her love of riding and caring for horses. This is the sixth book in the author's 'Morgan horse series'. The Morgan horse is the first official American breed. Morgans are affectionate, well-muscled, and known for their luxurious mane and tail. You get to know Heather and her Oklahoma friend Katie through their interest in all things horses. Katie introduces Heather to the competitive sport of barrel racing which uses agility and speed to finish the course as a winner. Heather goes to Oklahoma to visit her parents' friends but she returns to her home in New England with this new interest. Rimfire, a brown and black barrel-horse, is for sale but Heather's parents can't afford another horse in their stable. Heather finds a way to ride proud Rimfire in competition but she risks a human friendship to do it.
Rimfire and Heather get along very well but they find themselves in jeopardy several times. Although there are some uncertain and tense moments, things have a way of working themselves out. The paperback book is beautifully formatted with specialized reviews from horse enthusiasts, well-spaced and named chapters, and subtle horse symbols to show the plot is progressing to another scene within the same chapter. There are many exclamation marks in the text but this suits the energetic optimism of a teenage girl. The author's note at the end of the story explains that all the horses described come from her real life and it caps off an excellent tale.
