Rise Higher by Aureen M Monteiro is a non-fiction self-help guide aimed at educating women on the author's nine steps to overcome any challenge, become the leader she deserves to be, and do what she loves. The book is broken down into three parts. Part one covers the best personality trait on the planet and how to build it; part two solidifies its importance and puts the reader in a mindset to visualize their lives with and without; and part three dives into the nine steps to build this personality trait. Monteiro provides real-life examples and stories of individuals who have been successful and who have not, her own experiences, and reflective points throughout the book where a reader completes an exercise to personalize their own unique journey.
First of all, I love a book that is written for women, by a woman. This love is compounded when the purpose of the book is to empower women, and for that Aureen M Monteiro is ahead of the game with Rise Higher. Monteiro doesn't just rattle off nine things you should be doing; she addresses common issues and begins to build on the slow process of combating them. Change doesn't happen overnight but Monteiro gives her readers the best roadmap to get there. The chapter that resonated with me the most was chapter fourteen, Minimize Reliance on External Triggers. Two work colleagues have very different outlooks and their quality of life is directly impacted in both the physical and emotional sense. It isn't until one is left in a near-crippling situation that they are able to understand what change desperately needs to happen. This is a good book with really excellent points and is exactly the type of reading material I would want to pass on to my teen daughter as well.
