Special Agent Kessa St. James’ life takes an unexpected twist when the FBI sends her to Gig Harbor, Washington. Her job is to keep the media off the case and assist profiler Danny Harmon. Kessa just wants to find the senator's killer and go home. She doesn't expect that elements from her past would become central to the investigation, nor did she ever dream she'd wield magic. To me, Rising: Book One of The Adept Cycle by Shanan Winters is like X-Files with magic. I absolutely love the premise. It elevates readers’ curiosity and pushes it to hang onto every word, every turn of the page, every new chapter. Let’s just say that reading this book in one sitting is most likely for everyone, especially fans of the genre.
Certain elements of the story are not entirely unfamiliar, but Winters makes up for that by giving readers just that right touch of fresh spin with mystery and suspense. The plot is fast paced, perfect to give readers a thrilling read. Narration is clear cut with no superfluous parts. It took me a while to find Danny likable, but both protagonists are authentically flawed with believable strength to succeed in their goals. The enigma of the story holds well from the beginning until the end. Winters writes a gripping and very readable thriller, which features all the required suspense and plot twists. All in all, I enjoyed Rising. It’s a story very well told and a great start for The Adept Cycle series.
