Rosalie’s parents were very controlling. They wanted to protect her from all bad things. She was only allowed to be with proper people and to have only the right education. They sought respect and honor for their children. The setting is the early 1900s in America during WWI. African-Americans received very little respect. Rosalie follows her parent’s rules until she goes to college. She learned to think for herself and to think of others. On a trip overseas, she is stranded with no way home. She must draw on her inner strength and resources to pursue a new life for herself and change the lives of many.

If you haven’t read any of Mary Katherine Arensberg’s books, it is your loss. She is a wonderful writer. Her characters come to life on the pages. She draws you into their story and you walk beside them. "Rosalie" is a delightful read. It reminds parents that we cannot and should not, think for our children. We must teach them and allow them to spread their wings. They must be able to think for themselves if they are to survive this world we live in. It is with great honor that I recommend "Rosalie" for your reading pleasure.
