Rowdy Ronnie: Special Edition Rabbit Care Book is written by Shermaine Perry-Knights. Ryan wanted a pet so she went to the pet store to check out the rabbits. She had wanted one for a long time and selected the calmest bunny in the pen and named him Ronnie. It didn’t take long for Ryan to discover that Ronnie was only calm at the pet store. At home, he was an entirely different, mischievous bunny. Ryan became frustrated over the noises Ronnie made and the mess he left behind. She began to regret picking Ronnie to be her bunny. She had no idea how to deal with a pet that didn’t listen or behave. What should Ryan do? Should she return Ronnie or find a way to train him? Who can she turn to for help in this frustrating situation?
In Rowdy Ronnie, Shermaine Perry-Knights builds an interesting plot about the importance of patience, kindness, understanding, and empathy toward animals. I love how the story teaches kids that having a pet is not always what they expect it to be. Fur babies can sometimes be quite a handful, and knowing who to turn to or how to handle the situation is a very important message for pet-loving children. The illustrations by Elena Kisenkova give the story adorably detailed pictures of what it’s like to have a rambunctious bunny running through the house. The pictures help tell the story in a way that will keep kids turning pages to see what Ronnie will wreck next and how Ryan will respond to his antics.
