Children will be amused and delighted as the letters of the alphabet leave the page and take a seafaring journey. Sailing the ABCs is a fun story where the letters A through Z become characters in Ophra Ashur’s tale. Along the way, the letters form groups and experience little adventures. ABC set sail in a big boat, DEF find a cliff covered in vines and waterfalls, and GHI spot clouds shaped like animals. JKL look for seashells. MNO take a walk on the beach, leaving footprints. PQR go for a run at sunset. Later, STU gather their shoes and get back on the ship, while VWX rest on the deck under the stars. Finally, Y and Z play in the waves as they head home. The book also includes several extras. There are questions to test for comprehension, fun facts, and an origami activity for kids to enjoy.

Ophra Ashur writes Sailing the ABCs: An Alphabet Adventure Story for Children with a style that makes each letter’s moment memorable. Even as an adult, I was quite entertained. Her phrasing supports early literacy while keeping young readers engaged. At its basic level, the plot is simple and easy for young children to understand. As the letters of the alphabet go on a trip together, presenting the letters as their own characters, rather than the traditional way of pairing them with objects, is refreshing. Children who struggle with that “elemenop” pronunciation blend in the common ABC song will find this approach to be thoughtful. Mateo Cardo’s illustrations, with their watercolor infusion, add whimsy and warmth. Every page is a visual delight. Last, Robin Katz’s handprints as editor did not go unnoticed. The color chosen for each letter matched their names, increasing both the learning and enjoyment. Creating a story to learn a basic reading skill will be appreciated by parents and teachers. It’s an excellent read-aloud choice, a strong classroom resource, and a charming gift for preschoolers.
