Laura Briel Sullivan has written an adult tale for those who are grieving in Sailing With Angels. The story is both gracefully poetic and extraordinarily visually beautiful. Princess Briel takes her sailboat out on the open water. Along the way, she meets many characters who offer her advice and guidance. These characters are real folks who made an impact on the author’s own life. Therefore, this poetic tale was inspired by an autobiographical one. Princess Briel takes in all the pearls of wisdom she is granted by her angels as she plots her own course. Because both protagonists are on journeys, and meet people along the way, this book is reminiscent of The Little Prince, except that in this book, all the characters are likeable.
With charm and simple sophistication, Sailing With Angels by Laura Briel Sullivan comes alive through fresh poetry. Although the book is about the heavy subject of grief, its graceful phrasing and doodle-like, whimsical illustrations created a fairy tale within my imagination. I was swept away by Aileen Bennett’s pen and ink drawings. What I appreciated most about this story is the soothing watercolors and words that seamlessly flowed from one page to the next. It made me think: What if grief is not something to “get over” or “go through”, but rather, like life, is a journey instead? Wouldn’t we be gentler with ourselves and others? Sullivan’s ability to not only translate a serious subject into a hopeful one but also to create a unique and meaningful one makes this story a pure masterpiece. As Louisa May Alcott said, “I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.” It’s comforting to know that Princess Briel does just that, with a little help from her angels.
