Peter is a concerned parish priest who believes what he does is the best for his people, like his work opposing secularism and ensuring that the church remains involved in education. Damien is a friend of Peter and the bishop of the diocese. One of the issues Damien has to deal with, together with other bishops, is the issue of sex abuse scandals affecting the church. It's finally agreed to pay the victims, send those accused to get treatment, and then reassign them to different parishes. Is this the right way to handle this? Other issues addressed through characters like Ned and Helen are divorces and how the lack of contraceptives can impact society and the well-being of people. What are other issues covered in Saint Helen by Seamus McKenna?
It was interesting to learn that the events in Saint Helen by Seamus McKenna were inspired by real events. This wonderfully written work takes one on a gripping journey filled with unexpected directions and moral dilemmas. The thought-provoking work got me thinking about Irish history and how it was impacted by occupation by the English, and also the role the Catholic Church has played in shaping their society. The reader will appreciate the wide variety of themes covered, such as nationalism and the separation of state and church, and their importance. Seamus ensured all events were vividly captured, and the excellent narration also made the work effective in passing on the intended message. This was a good read, and I look forward to reading something else by Seamus McKenna.
