In Sammy and Comet Spark the Sky by Peaches Murphy, young readers are transported to a snowy northern village, where a young boy named Sammy dreams of restoring the mysterious “sky fires” that once lit up the night. His mother shares folklore about foxes whose sparkling tails once brought color to the cold evening sky. She also tells him that, unfortunately, all the red foxes have disappeared, and so has the light. Determined to rekindle the sky fires, Sammy sets out on a hopeful quest that leads him to unexpected friendships, including a new girl in the village and a curious red animal with a tail like a comet. Through bravery, imagination, and teamwork, Sammy discovers that even one small heart can reignite wonder for an entire community.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading Sammy and Comet Spark the Sky. This is a beautifully woven narrative of belief, connection, and the quiet magic that lives between earth and sky. I appreciated how Peaches Murphy weaved together a traditional-sounding legend with a relatable tale of a child determined to make a difference. I initially chose this book because of the beautiful fox I saw on the cover. I’ve always loved foxes, and I was intrigued to see how it would fit into the story. From an educator's perspective, it could easily be used to discuss broader themes, such as self-confidence, friendship, and problem-solving. There’s room to discuss Arctic or forest animals, too, since stories with animals are always a hit with children. It will warm both the heart and imagination of anyone who reads it, while also serving as a quiet reminder that courage and kindness can bring light back to the world.
