Sanctuary is an unusual and compelling work of fantasy and science fiction penned by author Makayla Love and forms the second book in the Titanomachy Series after The Gilded Cage. We return to the story of Shiloh, a young woman who has grown up in a devastated world after the wars of men have torn civilization apart. Through the horrors and nightmares of trying to protect her sister, Rilei, Shiloh has settled into a new way of life in Ironbridge, but the ways there don’t suit her. When a chance to escape working as an escort for a family presents itself, Shiloh takes up the mantle, but the Sanctuary they are aiming for turns out to be anything but a haven.

Written for adults due to its explicit content, this powerful new adult drama extends the character of Shiloh as she deals with recent experiences as well as new challenges in the face of seemingly unstoppable danger. I liked the intrigue that builds around the fabled Sanctuary of the novel’s title, unraveling the mystery of the true goings-on in the place with a well-handled plot structure. Author Makalya Love also writes with strong atmospheric descriptions that bring each setting and the characters to life, balancing this cinematic sense of realism with the sudden injections of fantasy and sci-fi horrors that Shiloh so often faces. Overall, Sanctuary is an excellent read, even as a standalone tale, but it also provides a superb continuation of a compelling and immersive action-fantasy novel series.
