Scandal in Boston, Book 6 in the Extraordinary Women of Courage series, is a suspenseful novel by Gail Meath. Devora Thayer is anxious to marry Lucas, a helmsman on her Uncle Max’s ship. Regrettably, Max sends Lucas on a dangerous, secret voyage, and he’s presumed dead when he doesn’t return. Lydia Corbett moves to Boston and befriends Devora, without revealing she is her mother. Lydia has unscrupulous motives and plans for Devora, using her as a pawn in her revenge against Max. She cajoles Peter, Max’s competitor, to marry Devora. Max is unaware of his niece’s friendship with Lydia, or that she’s become distrustful of him. Lydia’s wrath increases when Lucas returns, ruining her plans. However, nothing or no-one upstages Lydia, so she concocts a lethal game with Peter, one that the intended victims will never forget.
Gail Meath sure knows how to tell a story. Scandal in Boston is intricately woven with lots of action, adventure, tender romance, and suspenseful drama that will bring out all your emotions. The beginning of this fast-paced story is touching as it shows the type of man Max is. Lydia is so vindictive and self-centered. You can’t help wondering what evil she will do next. Devora is stubborn and feisty but is also a caring person. All the characters are strongly developed; you either like them or despise them. One of the things that fascinated me was the historical period. Gail Meath’s detailed writing captured the shipping industry and how enterprising and important it was in that era. Scandal in Boston is highly recommended.
