Science Stumpers: Brain-Busting Scenarios…Solved with Science! by Keegan Burmark and Kevin J. Brougher is a brilliant concept for making science interesting. The target age is probably teens, but this book would be appreciated by younger readers who prefer non-fiction. With simple text and drawings on each page, it does not overwhelm readers. At the same time, the book combines reading with higher order thinking, which is important for the acquisition of literacy skills.
But more than a boost to critical thinking and reading, consider Science Stumpers: Brain-Busting Scenarios…Solved with Science! as a source of fun for those who like to think about the universe and science. I enjoyed it from an adult perspective. The scenarios are set up with subtle humor, such as two astronauts on the moon wanting to play practical jokes on each other. Their schemes fail due to lack of air on the moon and other interesting details. The story makes the science memorable.
For those with worldview concerns, the majority of the book covers physical science, but there are a few allusions to evolution on both the micro and macro level. There are also a few passages with exaggerated outcomes (e.g. a pilot dies due to instant acceleration to the speed of light). Nevertheless, the authors pull off a difficult task of integrating science with fictional scenarios that just might stir the imaginations of young scientists. Science Stumpers: Brain-Busting Scenarios…Solved with Science! by Keegan Burmark and Kevin J. Brougher is a great resource for those who would like to share science in a fun and memorable way.
