Scourge of the Shores by Lauren Lee Merewether follows Danna Chadwick, captain and heir to a pirate legacy, defending her island from the sea serpent, Cain. Robert Jaymes, the youngest Pirate King, seeks to unify the pirate factions and expand his influence. When Robert’s fleet suffers damage, he anchors near Danna’s island, triggering a standoff between their crews. Despite mistrust and clashing ambitions, Robert and Danna repeatedly cross paths, sometimes clashing, sometimes cooperating, especially when Cain attacks again. After Robert saves Danna’s life and aids her recovery with a rare enchantment, they cautiously form an uneasy alliance to defeat Cain. Their shared battles and growing respect complicate matters, mixing duty, survival, and emerging feelings, as they prepare for a final confrontation with the sea serpent and face the uncertainty of their futures.
“...the sea whispered the DeepMother’s tragic warning. Nothing good ever lasted, for the goddess, too, was burdened with the world’s hate and ached for something beautiful in a sea full of storms.” Lauren Lee Merewether’s Scourge of the Shores is a beautiful tale of daring leadership, pirate alliances, and fragile trust. I love Danna's strength and how Merewether portrays her as a determined island captain who understands her legacy and responsibility, and what is at stake, even when Robert starts to chip away at exposing other facets of her heart. Merewether paints a spectacular picture of the sea, a character almost of its own. The pacing remains steady, solidly harnessed to a world shaped by prophecy, loyalty, and the fight for control. Overall, this is a romantic fantasy with a lot of action and even more heart. Very highly recommended.
