Scrag - Up The Hill Backwards by Jesamine James is a haunting and compelling story of child abuse. Six-year-old Marie's life is changed suddenly because of a real life monster. From being a child and enjoying what children of her age group do, she finds herself trapped in a web of deceit and abuse. She is no longer called by her birth name. Instead she is referred to as Scrag. She starts making strategies to cope with the continued abuse that she endures. Will she be able to get rid of the demons haunting her and escape to lead a normal life?

Though disturbing, it is a very courageous attempt by the author to put down what many others would not. The author speaks more about the psychological emotional trauma that the child goes through than the details of the abuse. An abusive step-father and a mother who turns a blind eye to the happenings is sad to read. The book will grab your attention and the author does an excellent job in writing about a relevant topic which happens in many households. The descriptive narration makes the characters come alive.

It is a theme that will encourage more victims to speak out. The trauma a young soul goes through while being a victim of abuse is horrendous and the author's intention in putting down the details in the book is to make people aware that these children need to be helped to escape the homes of abuse.
