Fans of the Bible will love Scriptures for Meditation in Times of Anxiety, Worry, Doubt, Fear, and Depression by Lakella L. Davenport. The author has taken the time to comb through the Bible and compiled verse after verse that helps one work through anxiety, worry, doubt, fear, and depression. The book’s first part is dedicated to scriptures that explain the need for and method of being forgiven by God. The book’s second half tells readers how to put faith to work and practice the verses that apply to the various things that bother people. Emotional issues mentioned in the title are almost impossible to overcome without personal knowledge and a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. The verses are quoted in the text, which is much better than just listing where the verses are found.
Lakella L. Davenport adds her comments to scores of Bible verses in Scriptures for Meditation in Times of Anxiety, Worry, Doubt, Fear, and Depression. Her personal notes are to the point and easy to understand. Each verse has a one- or two-sentence commentary on applying the verse to the reader’s circumstances. The book’s first part is designed to bring the reader to a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, allowing His strength to overcome difficulties. The believer then has the power and presence of the Holy Spirit to help them understand and apply the verses in the second part. This book is put together well and is a delight to read. Immersing oneself in the Scriptures is a wonderful way to lift one’s spirit. As a pastoral counselor for over forty years, I have used many of these same Scriptures to guide people to victory over anxiety, worry, doubt, fear, and depression.
