Renny deGroot's Sea Child: Cape Breton Mysteries Book 2 is a well-crafted and suspenseful crime story set in Cape Breton Is., Nova Scotia, Canada. Adam MacDonald, a lobster fisherman, is found dead aboard his fishing boat "Sea Child" in Pleasant Bay. The medical examiner ruled that Adam's death was a homicide, based on forensic evidence and an autopsy. Detectives Gordie MacLean and Roxanne Albright of the Cape Breton Police in Sydney are the lead investigators in the case. From the outset, the two detectives face several puzzling questions. Adam lived in Port Hood and was limited to fishing in that area. Why was he in Pleasant Bay? Was the homicide accidental or did someone intend to kill him? Working with RCMP forensics experts, Gordie and Roxanne piece together a preliminary picture of what may have happened aboard the "Sea Child." The tension rises, and the pace and action pick up as the story twists and turns!

I enjoyed reading Renny deGroot's mystery novel Sea Child, particularly due to its two outstanding characters, Detectives Gordie MacLean and Roxanne Albright. I liked their character development, as individuals and as a team. Both are courageous and forthright. I enjoyed the way they shared their insights and different perspectives on a person's feelings and thinking, motives, conflicts, and personal difficulties. For me, the case sprang to life as Gordie and Roxanne interviewed other characters, and worked with other detectives and the RCMP. The settings, dialogue, and drama of interpersonal relationships were realistic. I loved the evocative descriptions of the sea, the ports, and the people who live and work along the coast. I was riveted as the case grew in complexity and danger! The ending is well-crafted, dramatic, and unexpected in this mystery story about crime and two remarkable detectives, Gordie MacLean and Roxanne Albright!
