Secret Meetings is a work of fiction in the historical fiction, mystery, and suspense subgenres, and is part of the Bob Robbins Home Front Mystery series. It is best suited to the general adult reading audience. Penned by author J. G. Harlond, this fourth installment is set in wartime Cornwall, England. Against the backdrop of World War II, a mysterious traveler arrives at River Lodge, a peculiar English country house with a scandalous family history, concealed secrets, and unexpected guests. When Bob Robbins arrives, initially impersonating Winston Churchill, a tragic accident occurs, raising suspicions of a possible murder. As Detective Sergeant Robbins investigates, he must unravel the complexities of the Lodge's occupants, including a trans-Atlantic socialite, an uninvited American professor, and a secretive host.
Author J. G. Harlond transported me to a gripping wartime mystery with an intricate web of characters and secrets, steeped in historical detail but also fresh and relatable on its emotional level. The atmosphere of the era is brilliantly captured, immersing the reader in the challenges and uncertainties of wartime England with accurate research used at just the right moments to enhance the storyline. The plot's twists and turns kept me engaged, and the mix of historical elements and detective work was highly enjoyable. Overall, The Secret Meetings successfully intertwines the personal lives of characters with the grander context of the Normandy landings and struggles on the home front, creating a satisfying and immersive reading experience that I would heartily recommend to military and mystery fiction fans everywhere.
