Secret of the Sea Legumes by L J L is a children’s book focusing on the importance of environmental conservation. Lila loves fishing with her grandfather, but on this particular day, she is very excited because Grandpa Finn will show her the sea legumes, the rarest of all sea creatures. While out on this fishing trip, Grandpa shares the secret behind the sea legumes that generations before him have protected while cautioning Lila that this information is a secret they must protect. Back in the village, Lila excitedly shares the secret with her friend Emma. Soon, a stranger who has taken an interest in Lila’s village approaches the villagers with a promise of great wealth and fame. Grandpa highly suspects this proposal and, upon investigation, sees the danger this deal poses to their village and the sea life around them.

L J L writes with a spirit of community, responsibility, and courage to stand up for what is right. Two messages -- take only what you need, and a promise of great wealth and fame comes at a steep cost -- are aptly captured in the themes that include environmental conservation, responsibility, greed, and the allure of false riches, beauty, and youth which the villagers believed, not realizing this would cause them problems in the future. The pacing follows a logical flow of events, and every chapter starts with an illustration that depicts the crux of the chapter. I liked this approach as the images anchored the story so that even if you consider only the illustrations, you will understand the story. Overall, Secret of the Sea Legumes is an enchanting story that children will learn from and enjoy.

Secret of the Sea Legumes by L J L is an exciting adventure that helps raise awareness about nature. Sea Legumes are special creatures that produce magical beans with healing properties, but they must be used in moderation. One day, Grandpa Finn teaches Lila where to find them and how to catch them. The most important thing is to take only the ones needed to help the people and not affect the ecosystem. But soon, Mr. Greedmore, a businessman who wants to commercialize them to make medicines and other products, arrives. He manipulates people to work for him and pollutes the sea with his ships through deception. He doesn't care about destabilizing the town or the consequences of his actions. Now, Lila and her grandfather must stop this threat.

I loved L J L's writing style for its vividness. The narrative is entertaining, easy to follow, and realistic with a touch of magic. The descriptions are detailed and the pacing is dynamic, as something interesting always happens. The images evoke a cozy village atmosphere. All the characters are endearing, and I found Lila and her grandfather unique. Their relationship is warm and close. Lila is a determined and honest protagonist. The author shares valuable life advice and integrates this perfectly into the story which conveys many positive messages, such as empathy, teamwork, the importance of sharing, and not being swayed by greed. It also highlights the importance of standing firm for what is right without giving in to pressure from others. Secret of the Sea Legumes teaches that the most important thing is to follow your heart and do what’s right.

Grandpa Finn is a guardian of the sea legumes—little creatures with life-enhancing abilities. These unique creatures benefit the environment and the people in Lila and Grandpa Finn's village. Grandpa Finn reminds Lila of the golden rule of harvesting sea legumes—they are only permitted to take what they need and nothing more. Unfortunately, their village falls prey to the deception of Mr. Greedmore, a greedy and opportunistic businessman. Sensing their immense value, Mr. Greedmore plans to harvest all the sea legumes for himself. As guardians of the sea legumes, it is Lila and Grandpa Finn's duty to protect these incredible creatures. Will they succeed in their mission?

Secret of the Sea Legumes is a heartwarming tale of courage, cooperation, and the power of people to make a difference. With themes that touch on adventure, family, conservation, and the importance of safeguarding our ecosystems, this book is perfect for readers who care for the environment and believe that everyone—regardless of age—can help preserve the planet. Lila and Grandpa Finn are relatable characters who provide intriguing, thought-provoking, teachable moments about protecting the world around them, including the ocean. Readers will be glued to the story, excitedly rooting for them. Even the supporting characters, like Lila and Grandpa Finn's community members and friends, are well-defined and original, resulting in a magical adventure with a satisfying conclusion. This book is excellent for story time and as an introduction to environmental responsibility and classroom conversations.
