Everybody has a secret, right? What would you do if yours were about to become known, not only to your friends and family but to the police too? That’s the backbone of the plot in Secrets & Consequences by Jill Vance. Every year, while Jasper Trenwith takes a selection of his male family members and business associates on a two-week hunting trip, his wife Caroline is saddled with their wives, girlfriends, and even someone’s mother for the fortnight. It’s something she takes in her stride but loathes. Everything changes this time, though, when a dead body is discovered on the grounds. Every woman fears that her secret will be revealed, and rightly so; some of them are shocking! So, who killed this man? Was one of the women behind it? Read Secrets & Consequences to find out.
Part murder mystery, part salacious gossip, Secrets & Consequences had me hooked from the opening paragraph, and I couldn’t put it down. I loved the revelation of each secret; they’re all so wonderfully scandalous! Caroline is my favorite character; as a duchess by default, she handles her role at Trenwith Hall exceptionally well, and I went from feeling sorry for her to cheering loudly. The women are primarily awful people, and I loved to hate many of them. Murder mysteries are always fun reads, and I was delighted with the ending. I think it will come as a surprise to many readers. The story is entertaining and witty, and it keeps the reader hooked. Secrets & Consequences is perfect for lovers of murder mysteries, with a heavy dose of gossip thrown in.
