See You Later, Croc-A-Gator by Imogen Shelton tells the story of Alex the Alligator and Chris the Crocodile, who were born within seconds of one another in their nests. They became as close as best friends can be. They spent all their time playing together. They were happy with their lives as they were, but then things began to change. Alligators and crocodiles don’t attend the same schools, so they had to part ways each day. Then Chris went to visit his grandpa all by himself. Alex worried that Chris would make so many new friends and have so much fun with his grandpa that he wouldn’t want to play with Alex anymore, or maybe find him boring. Would Alex and Chris remain best friends with everything changing so much? Can Alex and Chris find a way to adapt to change, or will they grow apart as new people and places come into their lives?
This picture book will help children navigate life as things change around them. Alex and Chris are young, child-like characters that children will easily identify with as they go through the motions of coping and adjusting to growing up and learning new things. The illustrations by Alina Kralia are adorable and match the story beautifully. I recommend See You Later, Croc-A-Gator by Imogen Shelton to young children of an understanding age. Children that have a hard time appreciating the changes that affect them and separation anxiety would benefit greatly from this story.
