Be inspired to reach for the stars with Shakti Girls by Shetal Shah and Kavita Rajput. This collection of poetry highlights the achievements, grit, and power of Indian women from a variety of backgrounds. We meet famous Indian-descent women like Mindy Kaling, along with Indian-born women such as Indira Gandhi. Through the rhyming stories of athletes, politicians, entertainers, mathematicians, astronauts, altruists, businesswomen, and freedom fighters, we learn what it means to follow in their footsteps and embrace our shakti, namely the power and energy within. Best of all, it contains many engaging activities, including a hidden picture search in each portrait, Hindi and English vocabulary, a word search, and a journaling page for discovering your gifts and power.
Shakti Girls by Shetal Shah and Kavita Rajput goes above and beyond in every possible way. Far more than just being a picture book on famous figures, it weaves artful painting, activity, and work together to create a masterful celebration of Indian women. We see the diverse strengths of these historical figures as they persevered through hardships and societal obstacles to use their gifts and reach their goals. My favorite biographical poem was Dr. Kalpana Chawla’s, which praised her fearlessness as the first Indian woman in space and addressed the Columbia crash in a child-appropriate way. There is something special and inspirational to be gained from Shah and Rajput's collaboration, so please don’t miss adding this to your shelves.
