Shatter is the latest steamy, romantic novel by Joan Swan. It introduces the reader to Halina, a woman who goes by many names and has a seemingly mysterious background. Then we meet Mitch, a government agent who goes through women like cows go through a field of fresh grass. Mitch appears to be stalking Halina and we learn they have a shared past which is steamy and riddled with psychological issues. When the two are forced to work together in order to attempt to save Halina's life, things really heat up, both in the plot and in the personal lives of the two. Whom to trust is an ongoing issue and one which facilitates the plot and keeps the reader guessing who the good guys really are. There is intrigue galore and just when you think you have all the answers, Swan throws in another figure or issue for the reader to ponder.

The characters in Shatter were likeable but not quite lovable due to their innate personality flaws. But Swan uses this to the advantage of the plot and it works well. We learn of the personal histories of the characters in bits and pieces such that we are left to speculate and congratulate when we piece together a bit more of the puzzle. When we finally get the puzzle assembled, we are immediately drawn to Halina and we become even more confused about Mitch. All of this makes for a delightful read in which murder, violence, and intrigue combine in a unique way to foster an enjoyable afternoon of romance and fun.
