The world is a confusing place with lots of moving parts. Every few weeks, it seems people are angry or worried about something new. What’s up with tariffs and trade wars? What’s the deal with AI? Why the interest in Greenland? How does all this stuff affect us? Ronald Gruner’s Short Essays for Inquiring Minds shines a light on these and other topics. The book is a great resource for everyone living in these “interesting times” of ours, taking a step back from trending events to dive into the deeper political, economic, scientific, and historical backgrounds behind everything. Composed of fifty-four articles written between 2024 and 2025, this compilation is also a time capsule of sorts for future readers who want to understand or revisit the key events and scenarios we’re grappling with.
Each essay is fairly self-contained. You can read them at your leisure in whatever order interests you the most. Tackling public health, economics, foreign policy, artificial intelligence, and many other fields, the book offers something for every reader. You’ll also find some refreshing personal touches among all the political discussions. For example, in his article on Greenland, Ronald Gruner showcases his knowledge of the nation’s geopolitical scenario as much as his personal travel experience and appreciation for the country and its culture. The book is less of a comprehensive academic tome and more of a conversation, inviting you to start thinking about various topics in ways you hadn’t before without proselytizing or exhausting the discussion. Overall, Short Essays for Inquiring Minds does exactly what it says on the cover. Anyone interested in what’s going on in the world or who wants to learn about it should give this book a try.
