In Signum: The Serpents of Caesar (Book 1) by T.R. Burgess, upon his return, Ericus Vedius Verendus discovered that The Watch had been in Iolia, threatening the way the people on the island lived. Even with treaties in place, the once peaceful harbors of Lignoran and Iolia were not on the best of terms. Ericus attempted to gather information from an informant but later met his father Marcus Verendus face-to-face. Marcus claimed not to know anything about the symbol of the Signum and had several questions of his own to put to his son. These included how Ericus made it to the Island relatively unharmed and queries about the Emperor’s death. With rumors and fear spreading through the Islands, Marcus and Ericus agreed that it was time to act. Will their actions bring peace, or will the Verendus men wind up either imprisoned or dead? Is their goal brave and noble, or is it a suicide mission?
Signum by T.R. Burgess is a fantastic story of a young man named Ericus who returns home to find that his beloved Island of Iolia has been overrun by those who committed one horrible act after another, including the murder of politicians. The characters are distinct personalities that drive the story and make it relatable to adult readers. I loved the action involved as Ericus and his father butt heads while trying to find out why The Watch is there and their connection to the Signum. I recommend this story to anyone who loves a wild ride of a tale that they won’t want to put down, and I hope that the author has many more like this one in the works. I will be keeping my eyes open for book 2 of the Signum.
