Sioux Sunrise by Ron Schwab is the perfect cowboy and Indian story. Sarah is the only member of the Kesterson family left on the ranch after a small Sioux raiding party kills her parents and kidnaps her young brother, Billy. Tom and Joe Carnes are brothers living nearby who see the smoke as the Kesterson barn is burning to the ground. They immediately saddle their horses and set off to see if they can help. The two men arrive to find Sarah and, when they learn of her situation, they agree to help. Sarah, Tom and Joe along with Stone Dog, a Pawnee scout, begin a long and difficult journey that will take many months. The group travels from Nebraska to the Black Hills of South Dakota, facing difficult trails, hunger, snow, Indian attacks and injuries all in an effort to reach the Sioux camp and find young Billy. They quickly become a close knit group and learn to work together vowing to continue no matter what.
Sioux Sunrise is a western genre reader’s ideal book. Ron Schwab has provided all of the elements to make this a flawless telling of the days around the time of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Sioux Sunrise has just the right amount of everything: adventure, love, allegiance, urgency, determination and resolve to keep you reading till the end. I really enjoyed Sioux Sunrise and will be checking out other books by Ron Schwab. I was transported back to and immersed in another time and place as I read Sioux Sunrise in one night.
