“Best you know there are, in fact, dragons.” Well, perhaps not dragons exactly, but Sisters In Space by David R. Beshears does present its own monsters. A shuttle hurtles through the vastness of space, carrying two sisters, Claire and Amelia, who lie in suspended animation. When they wake up, they wonder how they ended up in the shuttle, what happened to their ship and family, and where they are. As they discover that they have been asleep for 80 years and are on a course to uncharted space, the sisters decide to backtrack. Searching for answers and a way to escape their predicament, they experience both the wonders and dangers of the universe. From an abandoned colony to a ghost ship and an intergalactic war that may have already claimed humanity, the sisters have no choice but to embark on an odyssey among the stars.

Sisters In Space is a delightful little space opera adapted from a multi-episode screenplay by David R. Beshears. It reads like a science fiction anthology with seven interconnected stories. It resembles a fusion of The Outer Limits and Lost In Space. The plot centers on the two protagonists and their quest to go home while seeking answers about their loved ones. Themes primarily focus on family and perseverance, which give the work a comforting warmth and set a positive tone. While the character development is light and constrained by the small cast, it isn’t trivial, and the sisters are pleasantly realistic. The pace is balanced and steady, which creates interest without becoming hectic. Sisters In Space is an engaging read and perfect for fans of low-tech sci-fi.
